UPDATED DATES Please Sign up to bring something for 100's day! We will be celebrating on February 13th and doing our Valentines celebration the following day. Each teacher needs one box of the above items (for raisins, chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, and marshmallows it would be one bag). Each class needs a set of 22 individiual boxes of Sweetheart Candy. If you would like to sign up to bring something for your class please tell Ms. Morse or send an email with your name, class, and desired item to [email protected] We have a GREAT trip to the University of Michigan Museum of Art coming up on February 17th from 10:30-12:30. This trip is an invaluable extension to our current IB Unit! We are learning about how color communicates and inspires and we will certainly see that in action!
Please return your permission slips (they went home in backpacks today) as soon as possible! You do not need to send a special packed lunch for the trip as we will return home by our normal lunch time. If you are interested in coming with us as a chaperone please contact your child's teacher! IMPORTANT
Dear families, Beginning on Monday, January 23rd, we will once again be taking the NWEA MAP Test on the computers. Students will be on a computer for 30 minutes, Monday through Thursday. This test is very important because it helps us understand what students already know and what they need to learn next. Students will spend two days on reading and two days on math. Please talk with your student about how to take their time and think before they click. Remind them that they won’t know the answers to some questions, but they need to make their best guess. We will be reminding them each day to use all of their best brainpower! Please share with them how important it is to try their best each day! A good night’s sleep and a big healthy breakfast go a long way on testing days. Please help prepare your scholars for success! Thanks for all you do, Chrissy Morse It's hard to believe we are already beginning our third unit of inquiry! Below you will find an overview of our unit. We hope that you will discuss our ongoing work as much as you can at home. We really see a difference when students are making connections between our work at school and their outside world! Thanks!
My apologies for the newsletter not making it up last week! I noticed in the folders that everyone is keeping up with their October calendars and the homework being sent home! That support is great and establishes an understanding for students that these ideas are important at school as well as home. Below you will find our newsletter for this upcoming week, it came home in the folders today along with some important flyers! I look forward to seeing families today and Thursday for conferences!
This week our focus in phonics is stretching words out s-l-o-w-l-y to hear all of the sounds in the word.
Below is our "Snake" symbol for stretching out words. While you practice stretching words out with your students talk about the letter that would go in each box (for example, "C-A-T"). This representation works best for CVC words (consonant vowel consonant). Enjoy practicing! It is amazing to think that students are mastering this foundational writing skill! They will be off and running to stories in no time. Wow! How time flies when you are having fun. Your kindergarten scholars are really starting to roll, they know the routines and they can put all of that energy into learning new things! Using our letter sounds to share our messages through writing is going to continue to be an emphasis this week. Below is the newsletter, Math Homelinks, and October Homework Calendar that will be coming home Monday. I will always post the homework calendar here, as I know how difficult it can be to keep track of that paper all month! The focus IB attribute for October will be inquirer. Thank you for all the great communication this week! Take a moment to be extra proud of your student this weekend, they really gave their best last week!
It was so great to see so many of you tonight! As we mentioned, coming together in that setting is so important to setting our foundation for the rest of kindergarten. We will continue to work as a team between the three classes and as a team with families. If you were not able to make it this evening, not to worry! I have the folders prepared for you and they will come home tomorrow in your child's backpack. If there are any documents that you would like more information on, please send me an email or drop by before or after school! Later this week I will be introducing the "Kindergarten Passport" of skills that students work to master during this first part of Kindergarten. Examples include opening wrappers independently, shoe tying, cleaning their desk space, and using scissors. Students will earn special stickers and once their passport is full, they earn a "trip" to a special lunch with Ms. Morse and a friend, where we will have a food from around the world. The process of filling the passport is not designed to be quick, but instead a great chance to work over time towards a goal. I will post all 12 skills here once it is introduced to the students! Thank you again for your support and teamwork! These cards correspond to a slideshow that we do in class each day to learn letters and their sounds. For each card, work with your student to say "name is ___, sound is ___, ___, _______". For example, "Name is A, sound is a, a, apple." There is also a motion that goes with each letter and the students are doing a great job of remembering these independently, they will be happy to teach you! While working through the deck of cards, have your student brainstorm other words they know that start with that sound and trace the letter shape in the air with a finger. Begin with noticing the capital letter formation and then move to lowercase as students demonstrate confidence with the capital set. Having early and strong letter-sound correspondence allows for decoding of CVC words and the other beginning components of reading! This is SUCH an exciting time for kindergarteners. |
