These cards correspond to a slideshow that we do in class each day to learn letters and their sounds. For each card, work with your student to say "name is ___, sound is ___, ___, _______".
For example, "Name is A, sound is a, a, apple."
There is also a motion that goes with each letter and the students are doing a great job of remembering these independently, they will be happy to teach you!
While working through the deck of cards, have your student brainstorm other words they know that start with that sound and trace the letter shape in the air with a finger. Begin with noticing the capital letter formation and then move to lowercase as students demonstrate confidence with the capital set.
Having early and strong letter-sound correspondence allows for decoding of CVC words and the other beginning components of reading! This is SUCH an exciting time for kindergarteners.
